I am New Orleans artist Joe Brewton, and I am just fascinated with maps & cartography! Mostly self-taught, I graduated from The LSU School of Architecture in 1989. I deviated from the constraints of the ruler & the t-square years ago, and have been painting & drawing ever since! Cartography is the study and practice of making maps, and I found that it can be quite a personal journey to attempt to document all of the places that hold a special place in my heart. I stumbled across drawing typography map ink illustrations as a result of a friend asking me to incorporate my india-ink drawing style to a map of New Orleans. I fell in love with map art typography as a result, and have transformed a one-time doodle into a passion! All of my original illustrations are hand-drawn in black india-ink first, and as a result of folks asking for customized color versions of my original drawings, I have also added these as well. I continue to add the series, so keep your eyes open for new additions…ENJOY!
